HIP HOP GROWS UP, Inc. is a non-profit dedicated to closing the gaps in education, between parents/guardians, youth, and educators.
It is also formed to help youth better prioritize images and words they receive from entertainment, and to greatly enhance the self-esteem within youth. The HIP HOP GROWS UP alliance with Bruce George, Co-Founder of Def Poetry Jam, to head the HHGU Literary Wing was happily announced last week. Additionally, HIP HOP GROWS UP, Inc. is very pleased to reveal the union with two exceptional women of God to work with the Spiritual Wing of HIP HOP GROWS UP, Inc. Dr. Yvonne Cole is a remarkable woman of God, as an Evangelist, Gospel Singer, and Speaker.
As a prophet of the Lord, Dr. Cole ministers to youth across the country. Her humble and sincere approach to youth is inspiring to see. Dr. Yvonne Cole is mother of Shun alias NUTTSO, who was hand-chosen by the late, great Tupac Shakur (2Pac) , of his group “The Outlaws.” And she is also the adopted mother of Superstar R&B Sensation, Keyshia Cole. “I am so glad to partner with HIP HOP GROWS UP, Inc. As a minister, I see the challenge our kids face today. I feel our kids want some one to hear them and HIP HOP GROWS UP, Inc. is that ear. If the elders don’t hear the kids, then who will?” – Dr. Yvonne Cole, continue reading this article here!
It was standing room only for Ms. Frankie’s star-studded birthday bash held Saturday night at The Pearl Bistro and Bar in Atlanta.
Ms. Frankie, mother to R&B singer-songwriter Keyshia Cole, and co-star of BET’s top-rated reality show “Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is,” celebrated her 48th birthday with family, friends and fans.Special invited guests included Snoop Dogg, Monica, Akon, Flava Flav of VH1’s “Flava of Love” and designer Mychael Knight from the hit show “Project Runway.”
“I came out to show my support because Ms. Frankie is like a mother to all of us,” said R&B singer Monica. “I also wanted to show love for my girl Keyshia.”
Ms. Frankie’s growing fan base has landed the celebrity mom her very own reality show currently in pre-production. Parts of the show, entitled “Holla: I’m Just Frankie!” were taped during Saturday’s birthday bash.
There was no stepping off stage for R&B singer Keyshia Cole, but that isn’t to say her showing was less entertaining. at least for those who went to see her.
Cole channelled summer sexy in a tiered white halter, matching shorts and cropped black hair - a departure from her usual blonde curls, long in the front and short to the back and side.
Known for power-ballads with an urbane rough-chick edge, Cole charmed on Should Have Let You Go amidst bluesy synths, black and white-clad dancers, lights and smoke for effect.
Said to have the vocal emotiveness of Mary J Blige, Cole was ‘Keyshia the vulnerable’ on (I Just Want It) To Be Over and ‘Keyshia the defiant’ on I Should Have Cheated from her 2005 album The Way It Is.
With emotions aside, Cole delivered a brilliant Give It Up To Me, a track that features Jamaican hip-hop superstar Sean Paul for the movie soundtrack Step It Up.
Just Like You (the title track from her most recent album), Heaven Sent (her latest single) and I Remember followed. But perhaps her biggest ‘forward’ for the night came from the popular slow jam Love, which the audience inside the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre sang verbatim.
“Thank you for helping me sing that. You guys sound amazing,” she said, before dedicating When Doves Cry to her mum Frankie, who along with Keyshia and her sister Nefetaria are stars of the BET reality series The Way It Is.
The singer closed with the still-current Let It Go that features Lil’ Kim and Missy Elliot.
Though the international acts put on a good show, their local counterparts were not outdone.

Definitely avoiding the sophomore jinx, Grammy-nominated and award-winning Geffen Records superstar singer/songwriter, Keyshia Cole, continues to deliver the hits with her third (3rd) #1 single, “Heaven Sent,” from her near-double-platinum-selling sophomore album, Just Like You. “Heaven Sent” currently sits atop Billboard’s “Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs” and “Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay” charts.
The coveted #1 spot is nothing new to the chart-topping Oakland native as “Heaven Sent” follows two (2) #1 singles from Just Like You: “Let It Go,” and “I Remember.” The single is the 7th #1 hit song at radio from Keyshia Cole over the past two years. Other #1s include “Love” and “I Should Have Cheated” from her platinum-selling debut The Way It Is, and the collaborations, “Last Night” and “Give It Up To Me,” with Diddy and Sean Paul respectively.
Keyshia Cole is currently in the studio recording her third (3rd) yet-untitled CD to be released late 2008 and is gearing up for a soon-to-be announced tour. While she will soon start taping the 3rd season of her hit BET reality show, “The Way It Is,” the second (2nd) season is the highest rated program in the network’s history. The straight-from-the-soul singer is also gearing up to shoot a film based on her life and while recording her third (3rd) disc, a tenacious Keyshia Cole, takes time out to crisscross the globe with shows from Jamaica to Kansas City.
